Cataloging a Mom and Pops Nursery
An employee of a small mom and pops plant nursery in Houston, Texas asked if I could make a catalog for the plants. Customers were asking to see a list of products available. However, the nursery is limited to only having access to Photoshop.

Goal:
Tools:
Create an editable template to pass onto the client so they can catalog the plants.
-
Adobe Photoshop
A starting point:
The client provided me with a template he made in Photoshop. He stated that these were all the ideas he could come up with as someone with no design background and wanted me to make improvements.

Persona: I created a persona to represent the audience.

Goals:
Buy plants to bring in nature into her room
Locate the nearest nursery that carries what she is looking for
Frustrations:
Annoyed with no list of what plants are available
Many nurseries are nearby, needs to know which one to go to

To keep his idea present, I wanted to keep the structure but change how the text was laid out.
Playing
with layouts:

I presented my sketches to the client, and he went with the following layout. The client wanted to keep a green background, but wanted to try different shades of green.
Turning Green:

The right shade of green:
After reviewing the options, we
agreed that a lighter green was
better to contrast with the photos

-
The client shared the final template with the nursery owners, and they loved it.
-
A catalog was available for the public and customers were happy to have a list to look at.
-
The client was happy that I kept the structure he created.
-
The client felt that it was easy to edit the template.
Conclusion:
-
This was my first time creating a template for others to use.
-
It was a great experience to collaborate with a non-designer.
-
As someone who knew very little about plants, it was helpful to learn more about taking care of plants.
-
I hope to continue to take on projects in industries I am not familiar with.
Knowledge Gained:
I placed it in the elements but felt that it was missing something. After scrolling through catalog examples, I was inspired by vector art and drew plants to add the final touch.
